Meditation has been shown to have many benefits that can be very helpful in this time of global stress. Some of those benefits are:
► Reduced anxiety
► Improved sleep patterns
► Strengthened ability to focus
► A calm mind
► An overall sense of well-being

Learn several essential tools that will enable you to begin to experience the benefits of a meditation practice. We'll cover lying down meditation, guided meditation, mindful breath awareness and silent sitting meditation. Each component will include instruction followed by time for practice and questions.

Bobbie Perkins

This workshop is great for beginners as well as those who want to refresh their meditation practice.

Facilitated by meditation instructor, Bobbie Perkins, executive director of Dallas Meditation Center.

Have you noticed that your meditation practice has been disrupted by a change in your routine during the pandemic? Do you find it difficult to calm your mind when you do sit?

This workshop is designed to address those issues by offering a refresher of what you already know and adding some practices that will help you deepen & strengthen your meditation practice. We will focus on:

► Identifying and releasing stress and anxiety
► Letting go of expectations and judgments
► Expanding awareness of the power of breath
► Understanding the role of meditation as a mindfulness practice

During this two-hour workshop, we will begin with a brief refresher of tools and techniques that were learned in the Beginner's Meditation Workshop. You will be guided through exercises designed to aid in identifying where you store stress and anxiety in your body so that you can settle into a place of ease. And we will enjoy extended periods of both guided and silent meditation.

Bobbie Perkins

The workshop will include follow-up materials such as helpful articles related to meditation and mindfulness. Guided meditations from Bobbie. An optional opportunity to join others from your group for continued support and encouragement.

This workshop is great for practitioners who want to refresh and deepen their meditation practice.

Facilitated by meditation instructor, Bobbie Perkins, executive director of Dallas Meditation Center.

Kerri Arista Kerri Arista is a native Dallas, Texan who sings and plays what she calls "acoustic folky smokey jam." In her words, "When I was a little kid, wearing pink hot-pants and white go-go boots, I used to make up songs and sing them to my sweet Collie, Lulu. One day, one of my sister's friends came over with a guitar and played me and Mom a song she had just learned. That's when I first realized how cool (and portable!) the guitar was. I think the first song I learned to play from start to finish was "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. I went on to buy the songbook of James Taylor's Greatest Hits album and learn most of those songs. I loved female singers and idolized many of them, but none more than Heart." "I still love to cover songs by musicians I admire, many from the 70's, but current ones, too... I also write and play songs of my own. I swear that songwriting (or whatever creative outlet you happen to choose!) is the best kind of self-discovery and therapy around!"
Lainey Bernstein Lainey Bernstein is known not only for her wide vocal range, but also for her wide range of singing styles. Her extensive training and experience in performance shows through her calm, yet intense delivery of any song's message. Lainey also teaches private voice lessons to singers of all ages, in public and private schools. In 2007 she released her debut inspirational CD, "Souls On Fire." and in March of 2014 she released her second CD, "Living the Light." Lainey also performs at various venues around the Dallas/Fort Worth area, as well as at New Thought Centers around Texas and the United States.
Noelle Chesney Noelle Chesney a native Texan, earned her masters and doctoral degrees in music from Ohio State; a bachelor of music from Baylor. She has performed with various companies in numerous operatic and musical theater productions from The Barber of Seville to South Pacific; Falstaff to The King and I. Noelle currently lives in McKinney with her husband and two children.
Timothy Hagen Timothy Hagen is in increasing demand as a composer and has won awards from the American Composers Forum and MetLife Creative Connections. His chamber and solo works for flute, published by Owl Glass Music, are increasingly performed throughout the United States and were mentioned favorably in the February 2014 issue of Flute Talk. Also a dedicated pedagogue and scholar, his upcoming book, From Theory to Practice is due for publication by Owl Glass in late August 2014 and explores how theory and history can help performers make solid artistic decisions. Meanwhile, his work on 19th-century virtuosity and flute repertoire is slated for publication in The Flutist Quarterly at the beginning of 2015.

The depth and breadth of Tim's experience as an educator distinguish him. He has taught for Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and The University of Texas at Austin, among many other fine institutions. His private students have consistently won regional and national awards, and he is in high demand as a teacher and clinician at universities, festivals, and conventions throughout the United States.

The group consists of performers from many backgrounds, musical and non-musical, and melds the influences within a traditional framework to manifest and express a playful sense of the power of community.

Sometimes raw, sometimes refined, his songs reflect a broad range of pop genres unified by standout vocals and exceptional musicianship. Known throughout North Texas for his live performances as a pianist and singer, he is also an enthusiastic guitarist and songwriter, as showcased by his recordings.

In spring 2009, Tinker independently released his first full length album, It Takes the World. A native Texan, the artist has performed and recorded with various local ensembles, and was a founding member of the Polyphonic Spree in 2000. He recorded french horn on the band's first two albums, earning a UK silver record for The Beginning Stages of the Polyphonic Spree. A cinematic journey into the world of a monastic community that practices the art of mindfulness with Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh. Filmed over three years, this visceral film is a meditation on a community determined to develop a deep sense of presence, not just for themselves but for all those they love.

Walk With Me - Dallas Film Screening sponsored by Dallas Meditation, October 17, 2017 SYNOPSIS

"Slow down and breathe. This contemplative journey follows in the steps of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh and is a rare insight into life within a monastic community. The sun rises. Everything is calm and still. Life is beautifully serene as Benedict Cumberbatch's composed, meditative voice reads an extract from Thich Nhat Hanh's early journals. So begins Max Pugh and Marc J Francis' (Black Gold, LFF2006) fascinating and immersive exploration of what it means to devote one's life to mindfulness. With unprecedented access to the famous secluded monastery of Plum Village in the South West of France, Walk With Me captures the daily routine and rituals of monks and nuns on a quest to develop a deep sense of presence. It is an insightful rumination on the pursuit of happiness, living in the present and our attachment to material things - a welcome remedy to the stresses of city life and a world in turmoil."

After consulting the board of directors, teachers, staff and facilitators at the Dallas Meditation Center, in accordance with recommendations by Dallas County Health and Human Services recommended precautions around the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we will close the Center for a week beginning March 14. Our classes, meditations and group meetings will not be held at the center from March 14 to March 21. Some of our gatherings and classes will be streamed online during this time at our YouTube channel

We will use this week to plan the next best step to take in order to keep the community healthy and safe. I had no idea when I chose the March theme — Safely Together — that we would be given the 'opportunity' to practice being safe in such a fraught environment. Please look for updates regarding the schedule on www.DallasMeditationCenter.com, our YouTube channel, our Facebook page, Meetup and Instagram.

During this week, I encourage you to find creative ways to practice on your own. There are many excellent dharma talks at our Dharma Talk archive. On that same page you can find wonderful songs, meditations and videos.

In addition to the sessions that we will be live-streaming, please also take a look at our new, Beginner Friendly Meditation Videos, called MINDFUL MOMENTS we have archived from our YouTube Livestream Program. Plum Village has a whole page of apps covering a broad range of topics.

You might like to follow the practices of the sanghas you usually attend during the time when you would be at the meditation center. That could include a bit of walking meditation, a quiet sitting mediation and listening to a dharma talk from our websiteor a talk by Thich Nhat Hanh. Many of Thay's talks are on the website listed above and also on YouTube.

Some of you may be experiencing anxiety. Wherever you are, I am sending wishes for health and ease to both you and your loved ones. I encourage you to stay virtually connected to loved ones near and far-let's minimize the isolation even while taking precautions to keep everyone safe.

During this time, we will be increasing our in-house cleaning protocols, and we want you to know that we are paying close attention to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) for any updates.

Please call me at 214-729-7040 if you have questions or just want to talk to a friend. I'm here for you.

A Lotus for you, A Buddha to be,

-- Bobbie Perkins, Executive Director

Brother ChiSing

Message from Brother ChiSing (updated September 8, 2015):

It's my birthday this month (and last September, my family and I weren't sure I would see my next birthday when I was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago). I am so grateful for all the love and support of so many during this journey of education, uncertainty, hospitals, healing, good news, bad news, and waiting (oh, the waiting).

I would love your support in fundraising for me to attend the famous BIG SKY Retreat in Montana (www.BigSkyRetreat.com). Thanks to Rev. Michael Gott from the Unity Church of Houston who was able to get me into the retreat despite there being a long Waiting List. The cost will be about $2,000 including the retreat fee, lodging, shuttle, airfare, etc. So far, we've raised $1,826, so we just need $174 to make this goal. Thank you for making my birthday wish come true this year!

In joy and gratitude,
Brother ChiSing

Awakening Heart (Community of Mindful Living)
Founded by Brother ChiSing, this welcoming Interfaith Buddhist Meditation Community (inspired by the teachings and practices of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh and other great spiritual teachers) is our largest main mindfulness meditation gathering of the week (30-40 persons) with walking and sitting meditations, chanting & music, inspiring messages, and community sharing. Open to all levels of meditation experience, both beginners and more experienced meditators. We welcome persons of any spiritual tradition, including those not part of any spiritual or faith tradition.

Tonight's gathering will include a ceremony with Dharma Teacher Terry Cortes-Vega for those wishing to commit studying and experiencing one or more of the Five Mindfulness Trainings. We welcome all to attend to support those who are taking this step towards creating a mindful and peaceful world.
• Those wishing to receive the trainings may download an application and return it to Dallas Meditation Center by Thursday, July 4, 2019.
Sangha YUM social gathering this week follows at 7:15 - dinner out at a nearby restaurant. Meet up at the end of our meditation gathering and we will caravan over to the restaurant. All are welcome.

*** Community Potluck Dinner this Sunday, September 21! Bring a vegetarian dish or non-alcoholic beverage to share. Bring a friend. Bring family.
